Mediobanca announced on Monday that it is launching a €6.3 billion bid to take over Banca Generali, a leading wealth management firm controlled by Italian insurance giant Generali.
The Milan-based investment bank — itself currently the target of a takeover approach by Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) — said it plans to offer its 13.1% stake in Generali as part of the deal to secure control of Banca Generali.
Shares in Banca Generali jumped 6.7% in early Monday trading, while Mediobanca shares rose 1.48%. Generali’s stock, by contrast, slipped by 1.19%.
